راعٍ أندلسيّ يدعى سانتياغو، مضى للبحث عن حلمه المتمثّل بكنزٍ مدفون قرب أهرامـات مصر. بدأت رحلته من إسبـانيـا مارّاً بالمـغرب، حتى بلغ مصر. وكانت تُوجّهه طــوال الرحـلة إشـاراتٌ غيبيّة وفي طريقه إلى الكنز، أحداثٌ كثيرة تقع، تمنعه من متابعة رحلته، إلى أن يجد الوسيلة التي تساعده على المتابعة. يُسلب مرّتين، يعمل في متجرٍ للبلَّور، يرافق رجلاً إنكليزياً، يبحث عن أسطورته الشخصيّة، يشهدُ حروباً تدور رحاها بين القبائل، إلى أن يلتقي الخيميائي عارف الأسرار العظيمة الذي يحثّه على المضي نحو كنزه. وفي الوقت نفسه يلتقي فاطمة، حبّه الكبير، فيعتمل في داخله صراعٌ بين البقاء إلى جانب حبيبته، ومتابعة الرحلة بحثاً عن الكنز.

وهكذا تتلخّص الفكرة لهذه الرواية بجملة قالها الملك لسانتياغو: "إذا رغبت في شيءٍ، فإن العالم كله يطاوعك لتحقيق رغبتك"

في هذه الروايـة، يستعيـد كويلو موضـوع رحلةٍ موغلةٍ في القِدَم: هل تكون أسطورتنـا الشخصيّة اكتشـافنا لحقِّنا في السعادة؟
